When my father was told he had ‘end-stage’ lung disease, his grave diagnoses was accompanied with many bits of overwhelming information regarding the possibility of receiving a lung transplant. Essentially, we were told, “you need to relocate to a new city, in a different province, for an unknown amount of time. You’ll need a dedicated support person, and undergo a series of tests, including one in Halifax. If you cannot afford this, it’s recommended you fundraise $10,000.”

All for Lungs - Claire Family PhotoMy family was fortunate enough that we weren’t worried financially. And though my father didn’t live to receive his transplant, the hope of receiving it kept my dad and our entire family positive during his final days.

During one of our last conversations, my father told me he wanted to run a 5K road race with me when he had his "new lungs." This is my main motivator for hosting this run and fundraiser. The idea of fundraising while my father’s health deteriorated was unfathomable. I believe that, together, we can help ensure another family, in a similar situation, is financially supported when they need it most.

During the first annual All for Lungs & Lungs for All, our incredible community raised more than $29,000 for Cape Bretoners in need of accessing this fund. Thank you to everyone who participated in and supported this very meaningful event.

Receiving a diagnosis of any kind can be isolating for both patients and their families. All for Lungs & Lungs for All brings together individuals facing similar struggles, supports an important cause, and lets patients know that they’re not alone – they have an entire community supporting them.

I hope to see you on April 21!

Sincerely,
